Create Outdoor Living Spaces with Decks

Want to Add Value to Your Home? Build a Deck — or Two!

A deck has two benefits: First of all, adding a deck to your house will increase its value and second (and in my mind, much more important) it will give you great enjoyment by providing an extra "open-air" room to your house. My family lives on the deck! We cook out, party, lounge, sunbathe, work on the computer (thanks to wireless!) all summer long. It is our favorite place to be.

So, how do you add a deck? Here’s a few tips to get you started.

First, take the measurements of the usable space and try to get a mental picture of what the deck will look like. If you decide to use a contractor, communicate clearly with him as to exactly what you want. During the construction process, continue to communicate with the contractor. If there is something that doesn’t look right, tell the contractor right away, so that he can fix it sooner rather than later. If you wait to long to discuss an issue with the contractor, it will most certainly end up costing more money in labor and materials in the long run. Regular communication will ensure that the process proceeds smoothly, and you end up with the exact result that you are hoping for.

Paying for Home Improvement Decks

Once you have decided to build a home improvement deck, you will need to do some research to determine what the deck will end up costing. The biggest difference in the total cost of the project will be in the labor that is required. If you end up doing most of the work yourself, the final cost will end up much cheaper than if a contractor is going to do all of the work for you. Materials should also be priced out carefully, since there are many parts to purchase and many options that can be added into the home improvement deck. If a hired contractor is going to build the deck for you, make sure that the material costs are in-line with what you were able to price out yourself, to avoid getting gouged with exorbitant material fees.
